Paris - Tramway T1
- Alstom -
A tramway that unites, connects, and inspires.

About

The extension of the Tram T1 line represents a major step in reconnecting the eastern territories of Greater Paris. Beyond improving mobility, the project redefines the public space along its route, creating a coherent, legible, and welcoming urban experience. As part of a design tender launched by Alstom, Patrick Jouin iD was commissioned, alongside two other design agencies to design both the interior and exterior of the new tramway.

The collaboration aimed to create a tramway that reflects the identity of the territories it serves while enhancing passenger comfort and experience. Through a refined approach to materials, colors, and light, the design embodies both functionality and emotion, offering a sense of calm, openness, and connection to the surrounding urban landscape. The result is a vehicle that integrates seamlessly into the fabric of the city while affirming the vision of a more humane and cohesive transport network.

The mirror of Grand Paris
In its early conception, the T1 tramway was envisioned as more than a mode of transport, it was designed as a reflection of the evolving identity of Greater Paris. As the first tangible element of the Grand Paris public transport network, it sought to reconnect contrasting territories and reveal the richness of their communities. From the start, its form and materiality were conceived to merge with the city: a soft, mirrored front that reflects its surroundings, a luminous ring symbolizing connection, and a bold red rear marking its presence and safety. These early design choices gave the T1 its timeless visual identity, both a mirror of the territory and a symbol of a new, human-centered urban mobility.
A calming, connected interior
The interior of the Tram T1 was designed to offer passengers a calm, comfortable, and enduring travel experience. Large windows open the tram to the cityscape, while natural light and soft colors create a soothing atmosphere. The spacious, well-lit access zones and dynamic lighting enhance clarity and flow. Thoughtful details, from the white handrails and fluid ceiling design to mirrored surfaces and distinctive graphics, reinforce a sense of unity and motion. Comfort is elevated through headrests and integrated USB ports, ensuring both individual and collective well-being on every journey.
